The past year has brought a growing narrative that crime is out of control and that past reforms of the criminal legal system, like California’s Prop 47, are to blame. In turn, proponents from across the political spectrum—Democrats and Republicans alike—are using this narrative to push for larger police budgets, increased surveillance tools, and harsher penalties. In this workshop, join ACLU staff for a facts-based look at crime rates in California, who is impacted, and what is driving this narrative. We will explore real-life alternatives to police or surveillance that lead to lasting safety for all Californians.
