No on AB 1814
AB 1814 will create an environment for more law enforcement abuse of a dangerous technology, fuel more false arrests, and derail lives.
Facial recognition use by law enforcement is among the most invasive surveillance technologies that exist. Its widespread use will permanently undermine California residents’ ability to go into a Planned Parenthood or gender-affirming care clinic, attend a protest or worship service, or move about in public without being tracked. Instead of protecting us from these dangers of face surveillance, AB 1814 embraces its use. It will encourage tainted investigations by incentivizing police to focus their search on evidence that supports unreliable and flawed face surveillance possible matches to get around the sole protection included in the bill.

AB 1814 Coalition Oppose Letter: We are 65 civil rights, racial justice, reproductive justice, LGBTQI, immigrants’ rights, and privacy organizations writing to express our opposition to AB 1814.
In a time where our rights are under attack, we should be implementing new privacy protections that will stop the deployment of harmful technologies, not following Alabama’s lead in creating a statewide law that will ensure their proliferation or opening up state databases.
