STATE OF BLACK EDUCATION CALIFORNIA 2024

Over 70 years ago, ACLU lawyers joined forces with the NAACP to support the Brown vs. Board case. Seventy years after this landmark ruling, Black students in California still face systemic inequities in education. This State of Black Education California Report Card highlights the persistent disparities and injustices that limit opportunities for Black students. Using comprehensive data, community voices, legal analysis, and more, this Report Card provides a detailed examination of educational equity and justice, and the need for healing and repair.

School segregation is one of 24 areas of modern-day inequality examined in the report and documented with recent. The 24 areas fall across three categories with unequal outcomes related to Black students in 2024: School Climate (bullying, school connectedness, absenteeism), Student Outcomes (test scores, AP courses, college attendance), School-to-Prison Pipeline and Mental Health (suspensions, school arrests, involuntary psychiatric holds). Data from federal, state, and district sources are examined across the 24 areas of documented inequality related to Black students in California. The report card also includes perspectives from Black parents, students, and educators across eight school districts.
